Posted on

The one week action pact celebration of 120th Anniversary of our dear school comes to a successful round off today, 18th November, 2018. All glory be to the Most High God for His grace which was manifested throughout the different activities starting from Monday, 12th November 2018.

A RETROSPECT ON THE DAILY EVENTS:
DAY 1: MONDAY 18TH @ SOLEMN ASSEMBLY
It was a wonderful moment in the School Chapel as Pastor (Mrs) Ekei Okpo, a dynamic Old Girl, led us into the ambience of our Lord, seeking God’s guidance and benevolence as the 120th Anniversary galore was declared open.
In attendance were great vessels of God notable amongst them, the Rev. Eyo Nsa of the UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR CHAPEL OF REDEMPTION, who advised the women and the girls as well as the entire Edgerley Family to stay focused and united so as to build a formidable school as exemplified in Hope Waddell Training Institution, where he had moulded as the Principal after the government handed over to the mission. Expounding 2 Timothy 2:2, he admonished the teachers and the Old Girls to have a teaching passion and be faithful to transmit a sustainable tradition of love so as to mitigate a disconnect.
The reconnect spirit of excitement could be felt in the air and its reflection noticeable especially on the faces of the staff and students who are grateful to be partakers of this glorious REMEMBRANCE.
Our quintessential mama, the delectable Principal, Elder (Mrs) Iquo Oboko Oku, with her capable Vice Principals, Pastor (Mrs) Victory Ebong and Elder (Mrs) Margaret Cobham, was full of gratitude to God Almighty for REMEMBERING EDGERLEY IN HER TIME.
Of a truth, EDGERLEY is proudly GOD’S OWN INVESTMENT.

ECOBANK: A REMARKABLE “WORLD SAVING DAY 2018” FOR THE EDGERLEY GIRLS’ COMMUNITY
The 31st October, 2018 is indeed a memorable day in our dear school, especially for the five blessed students, as the Team Eco Bank, led by Mr. Kingsley Okoi (Calabar Area Manager) pays us a second visit, and this time to mark the World Saving Day and sensitize the students as well as the staff on saving and the need to save.
Mr. Godwin Eton, the resource person, echoed that Eco Bank keeps its promises and considers local content and has therefore adopted our school as one school to be supported in financial literacy. As it could be recalled, the team had visited the school early this year in March to mark the Global Money Week tagged “Money Matters Matter”. Doing a refresher on this, he announced that there would be gifts for as many as would actively participate in and implement the knowledge gained from the sensitization programme. This he said would create awareness for the young people to imbibe a positive saving culture, have a reason to save and to introduce them to the world of digital savings.
How magnificent! Apart from the gifts of Mathematical Sets and Pens given to all participants, five less-privileged students were instant beneficiaries of this visit as Automatic Account with the Eco Bank was opened for each of them on the bases of their academic excellence and zealousness at studies. While Team Eco Bank pledged to pay in the fees as well as clear the outstanding for Henendeme Odohi, God’s-Favour Peter and Precious Adams, our benevolent Principal, Elder (Mrs) Iquo Oboko Oku, promised to open the account at N10,000 each for the other two beneficiaries, Kristine Astra and Marvellous Charles, hopeful that the Old Girls Association shall take up the challenge as part of their investment during the 120th Anniversary of the school come 12th to 18th November, 2018.
The Principal appreciated the goodwill from the Team and reiterated that parents shall hence be encouraged to immediately open savings accounts with the bank especially to facilitate the payment of the wards’ fees. Teachers were equally excited and indicated interest to imbibe the saving culture and to invest with the Eco Bank. We look forward to more rewarding investments from the Team Eco Bank as we flag off our Saving Club here in the school. Of a truth, Edgerley is “God’s own investment”.

OUR GIANT STRIDES IN ESSAY COMPETITIONS – LEGACIES FOR CONTINUITY

1st Position NIPR Essay 2016
A literary critic once averred that “if a race has no history, if it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world and stands the danger of being exterminated. Woodson’s polemics teases out an urgent indication that peoples and groups need to affirm their history in order to remain relevant in the world. This is why at EMGSS, telling our own success story, our giant strides in essay competitions is like

singing our own song and telling our own history.
Our journey started in 2015 with the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations Essay Competition with the topic; “Mobile Phones: Necessity or Nuisance in Public Relations”. In this competition, Edgerley student, Favour Gregory Bassey, among numerous students from other schools in Calabar and beyond came first, writing about 640 words in 18 minutes and scoring 99%. In the same 2015, EMGSS participated in the Annual Professor Bassey Andah Memorial Essay Competition on the topic; “The Advantages of Sports to Youths in My Community”. More than 50 schools with more than 700 students participated. Among these, EMGSS students, Favour Bassey Gregory and Oko Grace Ajuka came second and third in the senior category, and received

cash donations from the Bassey Andah Foundation (BAF) to support their education. Lastly in 2015, Oko Grace Ajuka participated in the UBA National Essay Competition on the topic; “What Matters Most to me in Life and Why”. With more than 4000 essay entries received nationwide, her essay was listed among the 12 Best essays.
As winnings continue to overwhelm, students were not complacent. Rather, these victories were like propellers to face more challenges and to do more, knowing very well that competitors were reinforcing to subdue. The victories bestowed a psychic state of confidence and hard work on the students. The popular saying among the students became; “we are the essay writers”. This state of mind has indeed continued to spur more excellent performance among the students in essay writing.
Favour Esin Otu
2nd Position NIPR Essay 2017

In 2016, our success story in essay competition continued relentlessly. EMGSS was represented in a highly contested essay competition on the topic; “The Future of Nigeria: My Dream” organised by Impact in Leadership, an NGO saddled with the motive of exhuming the best leadership qualities in young people. Held at the prestigious Transcorp Hotels, Calabar, the competition received more than 800 entries. Again, our own Oko Grace Ajuka came third while Blessed James John came sixth. Still in 2016, EMGSS participated in the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations Essay Competition on the topic; “Building Core Family Values through the Tools of Public Relations”. Again, EMGSS, represented by Ukpong Maria Okon came first. By this, EMGSS became the first school to win the NIPR most coveted trophy back to back. In her address to convocation in 2016, EMGSS Principal stated:
Elder Iquo Oboko Oku – Principal – the school has remained indomitable
“In essay competitions, the school has remained indomitable. It is the first school to win back-to-back the most coveted Gold Trophy in the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations Essay Competition”, she commented.
Indeed, EMGSS has lived to the reality of the above declaration. In 2017, and for the third consecutive time, EMGSS participated in the NIPR Essay Competition on the topic; “Moral Standard and Citizenship – The Nigerian Student as the Future of the Nation”. This time, EMGSS continued to give glory to God as her student, Favour Esin Otu came second. 2017 also witnessed another victory in essay competition. Our very own, Bassey Agnes Ekpo was listed among the 12 finalists nationwide with the best essay on the topic; “Choose a Popular Application or Technology, write an Instructional Manual to your Grandparents on how to use it and how to make the most value out of it” in the United Bank of Africa National Essay

Competition. Last but not the least, at the wake of the New Year, EMGSS was warmly embraced into the year by success in essay competition. Our inestimable twin, Beauty Offiong Henshaw and Angel Offiong Henshaw came first and third in the 2017 Professor Bassey Andah Essay Competition Junior Category on the topic, “Nigeria of the Future and what it Holds for the Youth”
Oko Grace Ajuka

Finalist UBA Essay 2015
EMGSS has equally participated in other essay competitions like the Goi Peace/UNESCO Essay Competition in Tokyo, Japan and the Gulen Institute Youth Platform Essay in the USA in 2016. Indeed, our strides in essay competitions have been our pride and a remarkable feature of our academic life especially in this era when students find it difficult to express themselves vividly in written expressions. In EMGSS, we train students intensively in creative writing. Students are properly guided by qualified professionals on how to translate ideas and concepts into written formats that will be read and understood. Our Press Club and Debating Society are equally platforms to boost and develop students’ potentials in acquiring proficiency in relevant language skills necessary to take up effective and successful leadership roles in the society.

Elder (Mrs) Iquo Oboko Oku – Principal
Edgerley House has emerged the overall winner of the 17th Edgerley Memorial Girls’ Secondary School Annual Inter House Sports Competition held at the School Premises on the 21st of February, 2018. This year’s victory makes it the fourth consecutive time the House will be winning the most coveted sports trophy. The annual sports fiesta which started earlier in the week saw six houses competing in various sporting events which include football, short-put, javelin, march-past, catching the train, cultural dance competition and various track and field events. The houses that took part in the competitions are Edgerley House, Orange Grove, Chalmas House, Asuquo-Anwan House, Nya-Inyang House and MacDonald House. The day’s event started with parade by the school’s special squad in slow and quick march-pasts, climaxing with the three hearty cheers to the special guest of honour.
Chief Nta E. Nta – Chairman of the occassion.

Welcoming guests at the event, the principal of EMGSS, Elder (Mrs) Iquo Oboko Oku stressed the need for students to participate in sports activities, maintaining that sports plays a very prominent role in the lives of students: “sports, as we all

know is very important in the life of a student. It is an essential part of extra-curricular activities that provides for the physical well-being of students. It is in recognition of this essentiality that the Ministry of Education, in line with the National Policy on Education makes it one of its focal point in order to ensure that students are actively involved in various sporting activities”. She averred that the school management under her watch has relentlessly strive to provide facilities for various sports activities and to create an enabling environment for sports to thrive within and

Also speaking at the occasion, the special guest of honour and chairman of the General Assembly Education Authority (GAEA), Eld. Mrs. Akpabio Nkpang, represented by the Administrative Secretary of the Authority, Rev. Oboko Oku expressed joy at the skills displayed by students at various events. He assured the school management of the continued support of the Education Authority in both sports and other infrastructural needs.

Nya-Inyang House
Earlier in the week, Edgerley House emerged winner in a tough contested final in the football match, with Asuquo-Anwan emerging as first runner-up. The third place was taken by MacDonald who defeated Chalmas 5-0. In the final result, Edgerley House emerged overall best for the fourth consecutive time with 722 points. Orange Grove came second with 617 points. Nya-Inyang was third with 504 points. 4th position was occupied by MacDonald and Chalmas with 459 points each while Asuquo-Anwan came 6th with 401 points.
Asuquo-Anwan House
Speaking to Edgerley Press on their continued success legacy, Edgerley House Mistress, Mrs Anthonia Ikwuoma attributed it to hard work, consistency and relentless efforts of house inmates. She says: “we thank God for crowning our efforts with success. I am very excited. We worked so hard, harnessing the talents and skills we have, knowing who to present in each event, making changes at the right time and what have you – victory. We are not going to be unnecessarily overwhelmed by this success. We are tightening modalities for sustenance because we are very much aware that we are still in a competition. That has been our spirit of victory” she concluded. Edgerley Press equally spoke with Asuquo-Anwan House Mistress, Miss Offiong Ene who maintained that the House is not demoralized in any way because it came 6th. In her opinion; “it is a competition and someone must take the last position no matter how best you compete. We started very well but we could not sustain the vibrant spirit. Some of our house inmates got injured but generally we have learnt something which we are definitely going to improve on. That is the spirit of sportsmanship. We congratulate the winners. Today, we congratulate them but tomorrow, we gonna receive such eulogies”, she concluded. Edgerley Press also gathered that this year’s fiesta marks a paradigm shift, from contemporary
Edgerley House Football Team
dance competition to cultural dance competition. Speaking exclusively to one of our reporters, the games Mistress, Miss Rita Oyom explained that this year’s event was specially marked out to celebrate different cultures as traditional norms are on the verge of being eroded by foreign traditions especially among the younger ones. She expressed satisfaction on the successful hosting of the event, urging all houses to work on their lapses towards a hitch-free and more successful outing next year.
Cultural Dance

Edgerley Annual Inter House Sports is an event organized by the school to celebrate sports, inculcating novel skills and discipline into students which go a long way to prepare them for future leadership and entrepreneurial roles in the society.
